The Los Angeles Police department is divided into four geographic areas, South Bureau, West Bureau, Central Bureau, and Valley Bureau. These bureaus are each patrolled by a traffic division. The traffic divisions are responsible for the investigation of traffic collisions and traffic-related crimes. In addition to investigation, each division also educates the community, enforces traffic laws, and does outreach work.
California law requires traffic accidents on a California street/highway or private property to be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 10 days if there was an injury, death or property damage in excess of $1,000. Untimely reporting could result in DMV suspending a driver license.
